When Garth and his wife moved into their Harrisdale home around a decade ago, the spacious 4×2 had all the bells and whistles they were looking for. Boasting a theatre room, study, large garage and alfresco dining – space was one thing this Perth home had plenty of. But, as the years went by, so did the accumulation of household items and Garth realised they weren’t using all that space as effectively as they could. Valuable living space within the home was being taken over by a growing collection of personal items, outdoor equipment and travel gear.

“…it had all the features we were looking for, and, at that time, what we considered was plenty [of] space for what we had. That was fine for a time, but as you always do, you accumulate additional things, add different styles and collections [to your home]. Most of it has value, but some of it is just there and not accessed as often,” Garth explained.

Acknowledging that adding another shed to the property wouldn’t be a suitable option to store valuable and sensitive items, Garth began looking at home storage solutions that maximised existing internal space.

“While some recent electrical work was being done, I decided to have a look up in the roof and noticed the wasted space. Then, while talking to my neighbour he mentioned he had additional storage included when he built his home, so I got to thinking.”

A quick bit of online research led him to contact the Perth Attix team to discuss the potential of an attic conversion for his home.

“The motivation for us really was so we could not only introduce some better utilisation of readily available space, but to add a little more organisation to how we store and access things. For example, continually pulling suitcases and the like out of cupboard spaces that aren’t really designed to store them, introduces accelerated wear and tear,” he said.

“When we initially started planning what we could utilise the space for, we ticked things off like suitcases and storage packing. Then it [extended to the] less used items for the caravan and camping trips etc. Then we started talking to Attix and…broadened our scope [to include] golf clubs and all those Christmas decorations, which seem to increase every year and for 10 months of the year are just in the way!”

After the initial onsite assessment, Garth said they were convinced an attic was their perfect storage solution, opting to convert their unused roof space into a 25sqm Dust Proof Attic.

“When you see the area mapped out on the garage floor, you straight away realise just how much benefit you would gain. We expected the addition of an attic would improve access and organisation and it did,” Garth stated.
